He and his close friend Iba Akio and the underclassmen that worshipped were considered the last big hurdle between the Hana-Gumi and complete domination of Suzuran. He and Iba were reluctant to join the Hana-Gumi until the "Legacy left behind " was dealt with.
Sakai watched in amazment as Hana fought Guriko toe-to-toe with the Demon King inthe gymnasium. Afterword he witnessed Guriko's speech about Hana and realised he was the only man worthy to Suzuran's head. He and Iba finally joined the Hana-Gumi. Ten days after the fight, the two of them met with Hana on Suzuran's rooftop to congratulate Hana on his achievement.
Sakai was present during Suzuran's war with Manji in the schools courtyard. He watched as his new Head fought and defeated Manji's Karashima Jun, Sakota defeat Shiino Fuminao, and Daizen beat Hama Toshio. Due to the amount of Manji members there, Sakai likely fought as well.
